The battery separator works as an automatic current/voltage distributor.
This ensures a distribution of the charging current that comes from the alternator, and is evenly distributed to all batteries of the various electrical systems. Be aware of the voltage loss!

The second modern variant is a separation relay, which first ensures that the main battery is charged, after which the voltage is transferred to the second battery. Without loss of voltage.
