Electrical switching and power relays are common components in engine and system electrical installations. With an electrical relay, you can use a relatively small current to switch a larger or different current on or off—often many times higher than the control current. This saves the need for thick cables and prevents unnecessary load on switches. In essence, a small switch operates a larger one via an electromagnetic coil and contact.

The contacts can be made of copper or silver; silver contacts can handle higher currents more effectively.

The control voltage—used to activate the relay—is usually listed first, such as 6V, 12V, or 24V. The maximum switching current is listed next, in amperes.

A so-called mini relay can often only handle its rated maximum current and cannot withstand peaks above it. Work or high-power relays, as the name suggests, are designed for heavier loads and often specify both short-term and continuous amperage ratings. For example, when starting a motor, there is initially a short, high current surge.
