The Cyrix Battery Combiner or battery separator is a microprocessor-controlled intelligent relay. The connected batteries are automatically switched in parallel if one of the batteries (usually the starter battery) has reached a pre-set voltage.

The accessory/service battery and possibly also a bow thruster battery and other batteries are all connected to the starter battery through a Cyrix battery separator. The alternator is usually connected directly to the starter battery. When the Cyrix battery separator detects that the starter battery has reached the connection voltage (the engine is running) (13V to 13.8V for 12V systems or 26V to 27.6V for 24V systems), the Cyrix ensures that all batteries are connected in parallel and thus charged. Conversely, when the Cyrix battery separator detects that the disconnection voltage (engine not running) has been reached (11V to 12.8V for 12V systems or 22V to 25.7V for 24V systems), the batteries are disconnected again.
