Description
The thermostat regulates the engine temperature.
It controls the amount of coolant circulating through the engine block by opening or closing.
It is essential that the thermostat ensures the engine does not become too hot, but also that the temperature remains within the specified optimal operating range and does not become too cold.
When the engine runs too hot or too cold, the engine oil will no longer properly reach the lubrication points of the various rotating components within the engine block.
If overheated, the oil becomes too thin and does not lubricate sufficiently, or the oil is too cold. The oil pump does not deliver enough pressure, preventing the oil from reaching the rotating components that require lubrication.
This leads to excessive wear of the internal moving parts of the engine. A properly functioning thermostat in a closed cooling system is therefore of great importance.
